The Australian National Botanic Gardens have been hosting their Summer Sounds series last month featuring Jazz and dance talent. Of course this means an opportunity to sharpen my skills at photographing bands.
With an day off work I decided to clear my calendar and head off to the Botanic Gardens to photograph Annie and the Armadillos. Hope y’all enjoy the set!

Visit to the zoo

Last week I went for the first time in a while to the National Zoo and Aquarium, Canberra’s own little piece of animal heaven. It was an opportunity for me to give the Tamron 70-200 a good workout and get in some animal shots.
Unfortunately for me my laziness for not going the previous day had penalised me with the lack of big cats since they were all hiding in the shade from the sweltering sun.
Luckily I was able to get some good reptile shots and managed to get really close to get a few portraits of the Wallabies in the native animals display. Anyway I won’t bore you with more talk, enjoy the photos and if you like them leave a comment.

New Years Eve Concerts 2012

This new years eve I went out to photograph Ian Moss who was performing that night. He was the headlining act but before that local band Bridge Between were performing covers and their own original songs.
It was fortunate that I got there early and found a decent spot to photograph from because as Bridge Between was starting to finish up the spots near the crowd barriers were getting packed. Anyway the night was great, I got to enjoy music, watch two fireworks displays and gave my camera a good thrashing.

This was the second occasion I was able to put the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 to work, it performed okay for the night but as I found the lack of stabilisation made getting shots a bit less comfortable requiring more energy on my part to keep the camera and lens pushed against my face to reduce camera shake. Auto-focus was a bit on the slow side but kept up with what was happening.
One thing I can’t fault with this lens is the image quality the shots that I got were tack sharp though it was showing a quite a bit of aberrations wide open. Despite the slower autofocus, lack of stabilisation it performed admirably and produced the goods.

Anyway here are the fruits of my labor enjoy!

Thunderstruck Kickboxing Fight Night

Earlier this month I went to a fight night (yes that one I talked about in my last post) and these were the photos that resulted. Overall I am fairly happy with the shots that resulted. Though I had a few handling issues with the Tamron 70-200 on an ungripped D7000.
Hopefully this should be remedied as I have a new grip which should make the camera less front heavy. Anyway enough of me rambling feel free to browse the slightly large set.

I am Nikon and have night vision.

Alright, I’ve been a bit behind on updates. But here’s what has been happening lately. After owning my K-7 for 2+ years now it’s time for an upgrade so I took the plunge, bought myself a secondhand Nikon D7000 and Tamron 70-200 f/2.8.
The main reasons for purchasing the D7000 was for improved AF performance and better low light performance.

I took out the camera for it’s first real outing last week to photograph a local band playing at a bar. Needless to say the lighting conditions were abysmal and I found myself shooting at ISO 12600 for more or less the whole time.
I was very surprised as to how much detail was retained and the minimal noise reduction required to get usable photographs. I’ve also got photos from a kickboxing fight night to process, so keep an eye or follow me on twitter to get the latest updates.

Belconnen Skatepark

Skidpan Day Photos

I went to a skidpan day with Lardman a few months back and got my first taste of photographing cars in action. Although I processed the photos of the day I never ended up posting them.
Until now after trawling through my hard drives I discovered them languishing and unloved. Unloved they are no more and have now been [finally] posted.

Across the Universe

My cousin finally convinced me to go out one night to do some astrophotography with him. We went about 20kms out of Canberra to a dead end road to see what we could get despite the clouds. This was probably the best shot of the night.

Exposure: 52 seconds @ f/2.8 ISO 1600 hand guided.
Lens: 28mm f/2.8 Protonar M42 mount.
Camera: K100D Super

Works of fire [Skyfire 2011]

Went to Skyfire 2011 last weekend, a bit peeved that I missed the F-18s. Having spent a good amount of time looking for a park, I settled for a spot at Old Parliament House. Unfortunately, I had to run all the way to the National Library arriving barely time to setup for the fireworks. Here are the photos that I was happy with, enjoy!

Civic GLBT Protest

Last weekend I went out to Civic to cover a GLBT protest addressing the issue of same-sex marriages. It was a hot day, the sun was blinding but overall the event produced some really nice photographs. Here are the fruits of my labour:
